CEGH 105 - Direct Support Professional

Course Description

A Direct Support Professional (DSP) is someone who works directly with people who have physical, intellectual or developmental disabilities. DSPs aim to support people in realizing their full potential. They assist people in becoming integrated and engaged in their community or the least restrictive environment.

This course introduces the fundamental knowledge and clinical skills necessary to be an effective direct care professional in the workplace. Students will practice the values, skills, and attitudes necessary to care for persons with intellectual, cognitive, physical, or mental health disabilities. Students will learn documentation skills, knowledge of rights, and how to effectively interact and communicate with residents. Skills include practicing standard precautions, obtaining vital signs, and safely giving medications including insulin injections. Students will learn about infectious agents and how to control and minimize exposure. Students will learn how to transfer patients using correct body mechanics, as well as how to operate common mechanical lifts.

This DSP course is in person learning at our new Lakeshore campus in Holland, MI.

Lectures, videos, and assignments are posted on Canvas. Students will view the skill information prior to class and come prepared to discuss concepts and demonstrate the psychomotor skills. GRCC's DSP Program satisfies the Lakeshore Regional Entity's training requirements to provide direct care support in community settings.
