Grand Rapids Community College provides information to students on their rights under FERPA on their website at www.grcc.edu/privacy and in the GRCC Catalog. In addition, GRCC mails a postcard to all enrolled students in the Fall and Winter academic semester which includes the web address where students may navigate to review their rights. A student may request a paper copy of their rights under FERPA from Student Records.

Public works employees are vitally important in our communities, and in great demand across West Michigan. Municipalities are looking for people who are passionate about improving the lives of those around them.
The need is great, communities have partnered with Grand Rapids Community College to develop a hands-on learning experience that prepares people for great careers and opportunities in public works.
Students will be paid for the time spent working with their employer municipality (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays). Classes will also be embedded into this program including CDL preparation where you'll gain the experience to earn your Commercial Learner's Permit, Green Infrastructure and Public Works Foundations, all of which is included in your registration fee.
Participants in the Public Works Academy will interview with multiple municipalities (employers include: City of Grand Rapids, City of Wyoming, City of Kentwood, City of East Grand Rapids and Kent County Road Commission) to determine their best-fit internship placement location.
Entry-level job titles include:
- Utility Aide
- Engineering Technician
- Equipment Operator
- Fleet Services Technician
- Maintenance Worker for utilities, streets, grounds, buildings
- Parking Violations Checker
- Plant Assistant
- Safety Specialist
- Tree Trimmer
- Truck driver
This is open to individuals over 18 years old who are ready to work. High school diploma or GED is recommended. Must be able to complete a criminal background check and a DOT Medical Card - which includes a drug test. Must have a valid driver's license, good driving record, and no recent DUI's.
*Applying does not guarantee an internship position; all employers will require candidates to complete a criminal background check and DOT Physical.
